Since the Shar Pei did not object to his presence and appeared to like him, Ye Fei smiled and picked up the little fellow. The two of them took the elevator to the 9th floor.
Just as he was about to take out his keys to open his door, Ye Fei paused and thought: I should probably send this Shar Pei back to his owner first. That girl had been frantically searching for her Sharpie just now. Who knows in what state she is now?
Therefore, he ended up knocking on the door of house 904.
A short while later, sounds of footsteps were heard and the beautiful voice of Tian Xinlan asked, “Who’s there?”
Ye Fei, “It’s me, your neighbour from 905.”
“Oh,” Tian Xinlan unlocked the door. When she saw the Shar Pei in Ye Fei’s arms, she cried out joyfully, “Sharpie?!”
Seeing his owner, the Shar Pei immediately began to struggle out of Ye Fei’s arms.
Tian Xinlan hurried over to scoop up little Sharpie and said, “Thank you, thank you. You know, I’m anxious to death over this naughty little fellow. I just don’t know how he slipped out. I had knocked on every door on this floor but no one had seen him.”
Ye Fei said, “I happened to see the little fellow hanging out in the garden when I came back. I expect he must have sneaked out when you were not looking.”
“Oh, luckily he met you. Otherwise, I would probably never get him back.”
“He’s now safe with you, so all is well. I shall return first.”
“En, thank you.”
“No need.”
Tian Xinlan thought of inviting Ye Fei into her house for a visit, but then, the thought better of it. It is not appropriate for a single man and a single woman to be alone in a room during the evening. Thus, she ended up not saying anything. She just watched as Ye Fei opened the door to his room and closed the door behind him.

That night, at around 11pm.
Ye Fei prowled through the kitchen, inspecting the pots and bowls, making sure everything was still where they were. It was only after he had made his rounds that he was able to go to bed.
While he was sleeping soundly, Ye Fei vaguely thought he heard knocking on the door.
He sat up and rubbed his eyes. Then, he reached for his phone and took a look. It was 2 o’clock in the morning.
Ye Fei sat in place, puzzled. He wondered: Who could that be? It’s one thing for people to knock on doors during the day, but who on earth would do that in the middle of the night?
While he was pondering over this mystery, the knocking came again.
“Who is it?” asked Ye Fei.
The person outside did not answer.
Looking out at the still dark window, Ye Fei felt a little frightened. What if the night visitor was a hooligan or something? It was one thing if they turn out to be r*pist, but if they come after his bowls, plates, pots, and chopsticks, he cannot protect that many individuals, ah.
Just look at this guy. He just happened to have some money in hand, but already developed some mild paranoia.
Finally, Ye Fei got off the bed. He shoved his feet into a pair of house slippers and shuffled to the living room. To give himself more courage, he turned on all the lights in the apartment, until the whole place was brightly lit.
He took a final look around, but saw nothing promising. Finally, he went to the kitchen and ran back out with one of his kitchen knives. He tucked the knife behind him and called again, “Who is it?”
The person outside did not answer. However, the knocking continued.
Ye Fei’s heart was thumping wildly in his chest. He uncover the peephole and looked outside.
There was no one there.
This time, he was really starting to panic.
There was knocking at the door but there was no one at the door.
“Please! This brother is new here, can you please not disturb me at night? Do you want me to call the police?” Ye Fei’s emotions were a complete mess.
While he was still looking out, he heard the sound of knocking again.
Ye Fei was really agitated now. He could see no one, but he could still hear the knocking. A ghost! He was plagued by ghosts, ah.
To open or not to open the door, that is the question.
Finally, Ye Fei looked down at the shiny knife in his hand. He thought: Can this thing handle non-human creatures? After all, it’s not a magic weapon. If I open the door and the thing beyond the door is from somewhere unspeakable, there would be no place for me to cry after that, ah.
However, if I don’t open the door, the knocking won’t stop and I won’t be able to sleep tonight.
In the end, Ye Fei decided to give it his all and shouted, “Stop the f*cking knocking already!”
Huhhh~~
Ye Fei grabbed the doorknob with one hand while the other hand raised the knife high. He had already thought it through, whether the knife was useful against supernatural beings or not, he would slash at it first. This way, he would go out fighting.
He flung the door open, but there was no one there.
Puzzled, Ye Fei looked around. He thought: Hey, even if you’re a supernatural being, surely you should at least have a shadow or some sort of physical form, right? However, not only was there no shadow, there was not even a single strand of hair to be seen.
“F*ck, is someone playing ditch the doorbell or something in the middle of the night?” Ye Fei muttered as he was about to close the door. Let’s go and sleep-
[1] Suddenly, he shrieked.
He leapt into the air and scuttled back. This time, his wider field of vision caught what he had missed before.
It was fine if he had not seen it. However, now that he had seen it, Ye Fei’s eyes widened, and his mouth dropped open so wide that he could have fitted two ducks’ egg side by side in it.
That’s because there was a person sleeping on the floor. The person was dressed in pink nightclothes that covered all the way down to the ankles. Long black hair was loose and the person’s head was nodding… they were… sleeping.
Yes, there was a sleeping person right at his door.
Although Ye Fei had not recognised the person right away, he quickly guessed the person’s identity. That’s because, right next to this mysterious sleeping person was a small thing. It was Sharpie!
Just then, Little Sharpie the Shar Pei raised its head and stuck out his tongue, panting happily at Ye Fei.
Ye Fei, “… …”
He was immediately stunned. [1] If that’s Sharpie, then… the person sleeping at his door was… that pretty girl from next door? Tian Xinlan?
But, what the f*ck? This is wrong, ah. Why isn’t this girl sleeping in her own house but coming to sleep at his door?
Still holding his knife, Ye Fei crouched down and poked Tian Xinlan.
“Miss Tian, Miss Tian? Wake up, you wake up, ah. What are you doing here, ah? Why are you sleeping in this place in the middle of the night?”
Tian Xinlan raised her head to blink sleepy eyes at him. After a little ‘oh’ of acknowledgement, she closed her eyes and fell back to sleep.
Ye Fei, “… …”
He thought: What’s is the meaning of that ‘oh’? Just what is wrong with you?
“Miss Tian, please wake up. Wake up, now.”
Tian Xinlan answered with a little ‘en’.
Ye Fei fluttered around helplessly. Why is this person not waking up, ah?
He was so anxious that his entire head was covered with sweat. He had never encountered this kind of situation before. He could roughly understand what was happening. This girl must be suffering from some kind of sleepwalking sickness, and for some reason, had chosen to come to his door.
Well, it’s fine if you come and sleep here. Just go home right away after you wake up in the morning. Why would you knock on my door, ah? You wake me up in the middle of the night while you sleep so sweetly. Where are your morals, ah?
Sharpie took two steps forward and rubbed his face against the back of Ye Fei’s hand. It looked a lot like he was ingratiating himself with Ye Fei.
Ye Fei looked at the dog, speechless. This fellow, when you see your master sleepwalking around, can’t you bark and wake her up? You even come out with her for a walk, what an outrageous pair, ah.
Finally, while Ye Fei was on the verge of losing it, Tian Xinlan slowly stood up from the ground.
Tian Xinlan’s nightclothes was very thin. While seated on the floor, there was nothing much to see. However, when she stood up, Ye Fei suddenly found himself looking at a very… stimulating sight.
Seeing Tian Xinlan’s very exquisite figure in thin nightclothes, blood nearly spurted out of Ye Fei’s nose.
“It’s over, I definitely can’t go to sleep tonight,” wailed this fellow in the depth of his heart.
Once Tian Xinlan stood up, she waved vaguely at Ye Fei, “I’m home, good night.”
With that, she pushed past Ye Fei and weaved into his house.
Ye Fei, “… …”
He was rendered speechless once more. He thought: Beauty, you’ve gone to the wrong door, you know? This is my house.
Author Black Lantern: I’m sure some of you might say that people who sleepwalk can’t be so extreme. However, let me tell you, I’ve encountered even more bizarre sleepwalkers. I know a friend who would sleepwalk to the pond every summer to bathe there and then sleep by the road until daylight without waking up. When neighbours found him, they would just pick him up and send him home. I also had a high school classmate who would recite poems in his dreams. Even poems we had never learned before would be recited. However, when this guy was awake, his general knowledge of Mandarin was barely acceptable.
Gumihou: Speaking of sleepwalking, my brother used to sleepwalk too. He would walk to the top of the stairs and just stand there, not speaking. Whenever we encounter him at night and asked him what he was doing, he would just turn around and go back to bed. In the morning, when we chastised him for being rude, he said that he had no memory of waking up in the middle of the night.
