“Your Highnesss!!! Uwaahhhhhhh!!!”
“Aren’t you being a little too noisy, Isaac?”
“Aren’t you being too easy-going, Lord Medite?! Rather, why are you laughing secretly to yourself like that?!”
I wonder, how long has it been since Prince Ulysses and Young Lady Makia had fallen asleep in that resting room at the research centre. I continue to sit by the window, gazing up at the moonlit night, waiting for them to wake up.
Prince Ulysses’s exclusive royal mage, Isaac Kyrgios, had been bouncing about noisily for a while now. [1] It was nice to have him around to break the bleak atmosphere of a certain Demon King wavering in that spot between their past and present lives.
“I’m sure he’s just exhausted from the Four Nations Conference. Goodness, everyone’s relying on His Highness too much…”
Isaac was clearly trying to talk himself out of his anxiety again.
“It can’t be helped. His Majesty is the absolute best among the White Mages. He could explain things better than anyone else,” I said reasonably [1].
“That said, the [2] kings in that room can’t even tell that His Highness is the reincarnation of the White Sage. There’s no way they could understand how Magic Circuits work even if I try to explain it in detail.
“You’re quite a sharp one, aren’t you?”
This [1] Isaac fellow had always been a little unlucky, but his loyalty to Prince Ulysses is unwavering. It was this loyalty that somehow made him into a capable mage. I believe he used to be one of those shady little royal mages that hung about the edges, trying to ek out a living.
Now, however, he was a mage in his own right. At his side was the water spirit Sui, which Prince Ulysses had not taken back. Just the fact that he had a contract with one of the Hundred Spirits would change the way people look at him.
The record had shown that the White Sage was quite the skilled educator. Perhaps Isaac’s skills were due to who his master was. Speaking of which, this fellow’s MP is about 2200, the general average for most mages.
“Well now, Isaac, what do you expect from Prince Ulysses? The general trend appears to favour Viceroy Raymond.”
“[2] That’s only because His Highness does not wish to be king. However, with the pressure from other countries and continents, I believe that this country needed someone like His Highness. A person with great power and a sense of justice should lead the country.”
“However, because His Highness does not wish to be king, everything is now going as Sir Raymond’s wishes…”
“That’s right!! It’s just so frustrating for our faction…”
“… …”
Since [3] I knew what was happening a lot better than Isaact, his pathetic situation made me feel a little sorry for him even as I chuckled to myself.
If His Highness accepts his past life and chooses to spend this life with the Green Shrine Maiden, Isaac, Bastion and other members of Ulysses’s faction will be so very disappointed. Becoming the groom candidate meant giving up the throne.
There had been many cases of the royal family adopting this position and all of them had to renounce their right to the throne.
This is to prevent a situation where the spouse of the Green Shrine Maiden ascends to kingship and maintains a separation of powers between the Sanctuary and Ruskia’s Royal Palace.
Now, I wonder what kind of answer will His Highness give?

“… Your Highness?”
“…Isaac…”
[1] Oh? Looks His Highness is finally awake. I glanced over to see what the situation was like.“Your Highness, what’s wrong?!”
Isaac’s panic was understandable. After waking up, His Highness suddenly started shedding quiet tears. After a while, he sighed, wiped his face with a hand, tightened his expression and got off the bed.
He went to Young Lady Makia’s cot and gently brushed back her bangs before turning to look at Isaac. [1]
“Isaac, I fear that I may have to betray your expectations for me.”
“What are you talking about, Your Highness?”
“I am thinking of renouncing my rights to the throne.”
“!!?!”
Whatever colour was left on Isaac’s pale face disappeared.
Oh my.
“Fufu~ Is Your Highness planning to propose to the Green Shrine Maiden?”
“Lord Medite…”
He must have just noticed me since I was tucked away at the edge of the room. He looked a little surprised but nodded his confirmation without hesitation.
“Indeed, I plan to try and become the Green Shrine Maiden’s spouse.”
“Th-that… are you serious? Your H-highness!” Isaac was tripping over his words.
He must have been very shocked, among other things.
“I’m sorry, Isaac. I know I am betraying you and everyone else who has supported me all this time. However, I cannot give up on her. I have already decided, I shall strive to make her happy this time.”
“How honourable, even though you had been so indecisive before.”
“[3] Looks like Lord Medite has seen through everything. Indeed, but… it was Maki-chan who gave me the courage the make the decision.”
His Highness was looking at Young Lady Makia with a gentle expression.
“I’m going to the Sanctuary now. Once I have completed some errands I shall go and pick up Percelis. Once Maki-chan wakes up, please let her know.”
“Are you not going to wake her?”
“It is my fault that she is so exhausted.”
His Highness put on his white cloak and jacket, straightened up and made to leave.
“Y-your Highness! Please wait…”
Isaac clung to His Highness, not knowing what to say but cling to him nevertheless.
However, when he saw the look in Prince Ulysses’s eyes, his face fell. Then, he forced a smile, trying his best to look cheerful as he said, “Your Highness, is this your wish…?”
“Yes…”
“I see… then there’s nothing I can say. So long as you are happy and… even if you renounce your right to the throne, I will always support you.”
“…Isaac…”
Looking at that pathetic figure crying on his knees, [1] I was reminded that this fellow was originally one of the First Prince’s mages. As the story goes, he was sent to kill Prince Ulysses but somehow ended up being his followed instead.
When Prince Ulysses put his hand on Isaac’s shoulder, the mage’s eyes trembled.
“Thank you, Isaac. It is my fortune to have a vassal such as yourself.”
Then, with a refreshed look on his face, His Highness made to leave again.
I decided to give him one last piece of advice.
“Your Highness, the bridegroom candidate for the Green Shrine Maiden must be recommended by the Archbishop or a management class bishop. The person who has the best qualification to recommend you would be the Green Shrine Maiden’s older brother. He is the first in line for the Archbishop position and has been out exploring the world since he was a child, in preparation for the position. I believe he has recently returned to the Holy Nation. It would be to your advantage if you can get his recommendation.”
“I see, that is good to know.”
“However, I did hear that he’s a pretty strange fellow, so it may be difficult to persuade him. Not no mention, he has the power to battle you on equal footing.”
“I see, it looks like I should prepare myself to meet him.” [3]
“Fufu~ please do your best.”
Looks like I would have the opportunity to see something fun soon.
As His Highness Ulysses left the room, his cloak snapped in his wake.
I watched until the shining white figure flickered out of sight, before calling out to Isaac, who was still kneeling on the floor.
“A truly splendid response. I wish we could show it to the First Prince’s faction.”
“As you say…”
He scrubbed his face with the hem of his robe. After a while, a complicated look appeared on his face. No matter his own wishes, he would respect Prince Ulysses’s wishes.
After all, their faction had been on the losing side lately, with the First Prince’s faction acting without even a pretence of courtesy for Prince Ulysses.
“That said, surely it’s fine for you to recommend His Highness as a groom candidate?”
“Hahaha, oh my~ what are you saying~”
Isaac suddenly stared at him. The switch between the sad and miserable person from before to a sharp person was rather abrupt.
Well, it was true that the Medite family had the right to recommend a groom a candidate or two.
“Then again, isn’t there such as thing as having the right person for the right job, hm? That way, Prince Ulysses could have a connection with ‘him’. They are all Demon King Class people, once this connection is established, not even the Sanctuary can ignore it.”
“You are just as self-serving and self-satisfied as ever. I don’t understand you.”
“Hahahaha, but of course~ I really want to see the potential of that connection. After all, that is why the Magic Circuit had been constructed.”
Isaac looked even more confused.
It was at that moment Young Lady Makia woke up.
“Ulysses!!!”
“Hello there, Young Lady Makia.”
She looked around for a moment, confused as she tried to sort out her thoughts.
Then, [4] when her gaze landed on His Highness’s empty bed, she sat up and yelled, “Aaarrgghh!! That guy! That guy totally left me behind!!”
“Now, now, Young Lady Makia. His Highness mentioned that he was going to pick up the Green Shrine Maiden, according to my old mother’s report, the Shrine Maiden should now be at the coastline with Tooru at… [1] hm, I believe they are at the coastline between the Holy Nation and this Research Institute. It’s not far from here at all, but people tend to avoid that place.”
“… …?”
Young Lady Makia looked confused as she put on my old mother’s cloak.
“Don’t you know? There’s a legend around that place about children being spirited away just around the coastline between the Holy Nation and the Research Institute. That is why ordinary people don’t go there, or rather, they can’t.”
“Hah?”
Young Lady Maki just looked confused at first, but then a dawn of understanding appeared on her face.
“That’s… residual magic? Is there a magic space?”
“Oh? So you know about it? That’s right, there are quite a few residual magic paces loitering around in that area. Would you like to know why? It is said that before the gods of Maydea divided the country, they used to live in the Holy Nation of Vabilophos. Traces of their magic still lingered. That is the main reason why the Research Institute is situated here.”
“… …”
Young Lady Makia suddenly looked like she had a thought in her head. I have no idea what that thought was, but she does look quite interesting.
“Right, good, I understand. For now, I’m going there.”
With that, she hurried out of the room.
Isaac was still waffling around. After a while, he decided to make the bed.
“Well, looks like it’s about time for me to go after them~”
“Isn’t that stalking?”
“Are you fine not going after them? Don’t you want to go and see how your precious prince is doing?”
Instead of answering, Isaac lifted his head and laughed awkwardly.
“His Highness won’t want that. To be honest, I have no interest in his previous life. The one I serve is not the White Sage, but His Highness Ulysses. I plan to put my trust in him and follow along with his decision.”
“Hoh…”
That’s quite the little speech.
I, on the other hand, only saw them as shadows of their identity as Demon King Class people. That is just how I am.
Now, time to go and record their actions.
How exciting, now I have another Demon King Class person on my list.

“Ohhhh… they’re really going at it…”
As I walked along the top of the cliff overlooking the moonlit coastline, I could see several monstrous shadows floating in the air. Countless magic circles hovered above, around and on the surface of the sea.
“Looks like a battle of attrition with magic circles…”
For White Magies, the number of magic circles they could create was limited. They are like a form of currency that could be exchanged for power and favours with spirits.
What happens when a Demon King Class with a nearly unlimited amount of MP go against another Demon King Class mage? Now that’s a sight to behold, isn’t it?
I took out my pipe and settled down to enjoy the view.
This is the place of beginning, let’s watch them reconnect with this place.
[Gumihou: I’m not sure if it’s the author’s writing style or if she was just attempting to be mysterious, but it’s getting kind of annoying.]
[1] Make Medite’s thoughts and words more mysterious and less ‘lacking information’. There’s being cryptic, and then there’s ‘what the f*ck’? [2] Make Isaac’s dialogues less weird and stilted [3] Adjustments. Another one of those weird grammar tics where a ‘since’ would be better than ‘although’ [4] Adjust this weird thing
She looks around for a moment, sorting out her waking thoughts. And she seemed to finally understand the current situation, and when she confirmed that His Highness was not in the bed next to her, her expression was greatly surprised.
