Fanfiction 019 – Crossover Delicious in Dungeon – Thanksgiving (Part 2)
“FOUR HOURS?!!”
I jumped.
The group behind me looked horrified.
“Well, what do you expect?” I said exasperatedly. “Roasting takes time, you know?”
“B-but, we want to eat it now!!” someone shouted.
“Nuu, why not just roast it with fire!”
“I can use my Dragon Breath…”
“Enough!” with a clang of his weapon, Senshi glared at the group of complainers.
I privately cheered Senshi in the background. Yeah! You tell ‘em.
“Good food takes time. Have you never heard of slow food?! Roasting, boiling and setting all take time and effort. Food must be properly heated through and cooked to achieve maximum deliciousness! How dare you suggest turning up the fire! A hot fire does not speed up cooking!! That way lay the path of burnt, uncooked food! The worse of the worst!”
Fufufu, it was so gratifying to see Fer and Grandpa Gon being berated by a Dwarf, ah, but why were Laios and his group kneeling in front of Senshi too?
Oh well, who cares, let’s make something else while the Giant Dodo’s cooking in the oven.
Ignoring those people being lectured, I picked out a space and set up my barbecue stove. That’s right, while waiting for the Stuffed Giant Dodo, let’s grill some delicious vegetables first! Mercille immediately sidled over at the sight of fresh vegetables.
“Are those… lettuce? Wow, it’s been a while since I’d seen such gorgeous leaves, and these tiny things… are they some kind of fruit?”
“Technically,” I said with a blush as I opened a box. “These are called Cherry Tomatoes. W-would you like to try one?”
“Cherry Tomatoes? Are they cherry-like tomatoes?”
“Why don’t you try one?” I said as I placed one into her fair hand.
“Hup, oh! They are sweet! And, a little spicy too? How odd, these are so flavourful,” she gasped behind her hand.
“Fufu, some people called them little flavour bombs, they are great on their own. I’m going to make a salad with these,” I said, feeling oddly proud.
“A salad! It’s been a while since I had fresh greens. Um, if you don’t mind, I could help you…”
Ahhh~ Mercille-chan looked so cute with her blonde hair, expressive green eyes and pointy ears~
I know that my ‘love status’ in that world is shit or something, but since this was another world that’s different from Fer’s world, surely… Oh, but I mustn’t come on too strong. No one likes a creepy guy…
“Ahem, sure. Er, here, please slice these onions. The key to a good salad is freshness, but even salad leaves could be a little boring, which is why we need a pop of flavour with these Cherry Tomatoes. Ah, I’ve chosen to use these large onions for their mild flavour, just slice them thinly…”
“I see, okay, I’ll get to it!” said Marcille with a cheerful smile as she pushed up her sleeves. “To think I’d get to slice onions with a Mithril knife, how extravagant~!”
“Haha,” I said as I happily prepared the pumpkins for grilling. Yes, the veggie grill that I had envisioned before is coming to being, no matter what.
Mwahahaha!
It did not take long to start a fire or for the various squashes to start cooking up. For most of the squashes, I merely sprinkled a bit of salt on them, but for others, I slathered a generous amount of honey and oil, letting the surface blister and char before taking them out. Just before serving, I scattered some sesame seeds on them.
“Wow, these are beautiful! They looked almost like jewels~” Marcille’s eyes sparkled like gems as she admired the grilled Teriyaki Pumpkin.
“Well, thank you, I-”
“Oi, gimme some of that.”
“How unfair! How could you enjoy delicious food on your own!”
“”Aruji~ shiny~ yummy~””
“”Hey, I want some of those too! Wait, grill this one as well!”” Dora-chan shouted as he zipped around the room once and grabbed one of the smaller squash that had been hanging like a decoration near the ceiling. “”This one has a great smell, I want to know what it tasted like!””
“Wait, isn’t that a Jewel Kin? What’s that doing here?” Marcille suddenly rushed over to study the brilliantly glossy little squash. “This… this is an important alchemical ingredient! You can’t just eat it like that!!!”
“”No! This is mine!”” Dora-chan curled himself around the squash. “”Mine!””
The next thing I knew, long blonde hair flew and claws slashed. That’s right, Marcille had gotten into a fight with Dora-chan.
“… So, who wants Barbecued Pumpkins?”
“Me!”
“Yay!”
It did not take long for this crowd of hungry beings to polish everything off my grill. Senshi immediately took control of my knife and cutting board while Laios and his sister looked through the room for more squash with added interest. They brought different kinds of squash and pumpkins to Senshi and everyone had a nice time chowing down on these delicious grilled vegetables.
Naturally, my salads were quite well received by everyone-
“I refuse this thing.”
-except for that one creature.
Just as we settled down for a rest, there was a ‘Ding’ from the oven and suddenly, everyone’s attention was on the stove.
“Is it done? Is it done? It’s done, isn’t it? Nuuu, let me eat it!”
“Would you allow me to do the honours?” Senshi asked with shining eyes.
“Uh, you mean cutting up the Giant Dodo? Sure, go ahead,” I was in the middle of getting up when this request was made. Well, I’m happy to sit back down!
Everyone crowded around Senshi as he removed the bird from the oven and set it down on the stove with a weighty ‘thump’. Steam rose from the golden brown meat and I must say, it certainly looked pretty legit. The extra stuffing under the neck flap rounded off the bird, making it look even more beautiful.
“I-I’m going to carve it now,” said Senshi.
“Yes!! Do it!!”
The Giant Dodo was carved across the grain. The stuffing kept the breast meat moist and flavourful and I must say, the cross-section between the brown stuffing and pure white flesh was really pretty.
Not that my familiars appreciate the aesthetics much as they threw the meat almost directly into their mouths, hardly even chewing at all.
“Woah, look at this! I didn’t know that bird meat could be made this way,” said Laios admiringly.
“It looks like something that would be served at a fancy restaurant,” said Marcille with a sigh.
“Woah! It’s delicious!”
“I want another piece!”
“Hey! Don’t cut in line!”
We ate the breast meat, followed by the thigh meat. Then, Senshi cracked the bird open and we devoured the stuffing on bread with a little good strawberry jam.
Everything was delicious.
I’m glad we had this experience.
