Fanfiction 022 – Rosendal’s Speciality – The Bread
“Wow, this place is really lively!” Rita cried as she ran back towards the party, after having scouted ahead as usual.
“There is certainly a rustic kind of charm to it,” said Werner as he looked around the rolling farmlands and the lack of vicious monsters lurking in the fields. However, as one of the most important food crop areas, watchtowers had been set up to look out for insect-type monsters, such as the Evil Locust and Voracious Hoppers.
Whole cities could suffer from famine if crops are destroyed.
“Hey, do you think there’s a festival going on?” asked Vincent a little excitedly as they crested a small hill to the sight of rows upon rows of stalls that were sending up delicious smells.
“Hmm, from the looks of the stalls, they must have festivals fairly often,” observed Ramon.
“More importantly, it smells delicious!” Rita yelled before running ahead again.
The party of five, [Will of Iron]’s first impression of Rosendal was very positive as they took in the sight, sound and smell of the so-called meat dungeon town.
Rita and Vincent dashed forward first, eager to investigate the stalls. The other three, Werner, Franca and Ramon looked on indulgently.
Eventually, a small frown crept up Franca’s face, “I understand that they have a meat dungeon here, but to think that nearly all of the stalls are just selling… meat.”
“Heh, I bet Fer-sama would love this place,” said Werner as he looked at the links of sausages and cubes of meat floating in various stews.
“Hoho, indeed,” said Ramon as he stroked his beard. “I heard that the jerky here is quite delicious. Shall we get some?”
“Sure, why not?” said Werner easily.
Rita and Vincent ran back to them, a skewer in each hand and their cheeks bulging with food.
“Sir! That stall over there has the best-skewered pork I ever had!” said Rita through a mouthful of food.
“Forget the pork, that stall there has the best beef stew ever! It’s soft and delicious, I’m sure even an old man like you can bite into it-”
Ramon whacked Vincent on the head with his staff before the swordsman could finish his line.
Rita sniggered from the side.
It was quite a challenge to resist buying everything on sight as they made their way toward’s the Adventurer’s Guild. All five of them were stuffed when they arrived at the counter.
The counter lady smiled at them, “New here?”
“Oof, yeah,” said Werner, “It’s that obvious, huh?”
“Newcomers can’t resist eating everything when they first come here,” she said with a chuckle as they got her forms out.
For the first time, Werner and his party realised just how many paper bags of food and skewers they were clutching. Everyone blushed, but the counter lady reassured them that this was perfectly normal. A quick look around showed that nearly everyone in the room had a bag of food on them or some sauce on their lips. Still, their party was the only one loaded down with… stuff.
“You should try our speciality Rosendal Bread,” she said. “It’s great when eaten with roasted meat and pickles.”
It did not take them long to register themselves and get permission to enter the dungeon. As they stepped out of the guild, the [Iron Will] party exchanged looks.
“So, dungeon or bread?” asked Vincent.
“I vote bread!” said Rita.
“Ugh, I can’t eat anymore,” Franca groaned.
“Neither can I,” said Ramon. “However, I am still interested to see what this place has to offer in terms of preserved food. It has to be some sort of preserved meat, don’t you think so?”
“You know, until I met you, I never imagine that wizards enjoy eating meat in particular,” said Franca.
“Why not? Magic takes a lot of energy, you know?” he said loftily.
“Now, now, since it is our first time here, let us take a break and explore the place a little. We can make our way towards to bread area and check out the meats for sale on the way. Moreover, since the dungeon is considered an ‘easy’ one, especially those first few floors, I don’t think we need to spend too much money on new gear. So, let’s splurge on food instead.”
A cheer answered him.

The hunt for Rosendal’s Signature Bread brought them down lanes lined with stalls selling things other than grilled meat, much to Franca’s relief. Especially when they came across stalls selling salads made from boiled potatoes and other vegetables, there was even a stall that sold something called a fruit salad which everyone agreed was incredibly tasty.
Finally, they chance upon a stall that sold nothing but stacks and stacks of bread. Moreover, everyone was limited to a maximum of two small loaves. Curious, the party joined up the line to purchase some.
The stall was manned by two young girls. Next to them was a stall manned by two young boys selling some sort of stew…
“Oi, what sort of meat is that?” asked Vincent as they inched forward in their line. Thankfully, because everyone bought the same thing, two loaves of bread, the line moved rather quickly since the bread was already prepackaged and nearly everyone had the exact change.
“Smells like… hmm, I’m not sure, it is kind of gamey, but not unpleasant,” said Ramon. “Makes me want to have a mug of beer with it though.”
“Hey, old man! You have a good nose!” the boy behind the stall said cheerfully. “We’re selling offal soup! It’s delicious.”
“Oh, ah, offal?” Franca wrinkled her nose uncertainly.
“Yup! We got the recipe from this uncle. Well, we got the original recipe and we are perfecting it!”
“Yup! Yup!”
“You’re not supposed to call him uncle! It’s brother! Brother Mukouda!”
“Oh?” all five members of [Iron Will] perked up.
If the source was Mukouda…
“Boy! Five bowls of your guts stew!”
“Eh? Coming right up!!”

Even though they had bought the stew and were now seated at a convenient dining area, nearly all of them were studying the steaming bowls a little hesitantly.
Ramon had gone off to a nearby stall to purchase beer.
He was the only one truly looking forward to the stew.
For now, Rita was studying the bread.
“Hey, didn’t the counter lady say grilled meat is great with this bread?” said Rita.
“Indeed, how about making some sandwiches?” Vincent suggested as he whipped out a small dagger. “Like the ones Mukouda made for us back then.”
“Indeed, we could also add some vegetables as well,” Ramona suggested as she set her bowl of salad on the table.
Werner was already splitting his bread and stuffing it with meat and vegetables. He took a bite and considered.
“Hmm, not bad, I think…” he set down the sandwich and rummaged through his pack and brought out a wedge of cheese. He borrowed Vincent’s dagger and sliced a few shavings of cheese onto the sandwich and grunted. “Yup, much better.”
Franca had stacked more vegetables than meat into her sandwich while Rita and Vincent opted for meat-only sets.
Ramon arrived to glare at them, “Starting off without me, eh?” as he set down the mugs of beer.
“You’re too slow, old man,” Rita cried, even as she snatched up one of the mugs and started chugging.
Ramon shook his head at her, “Young people nowadays don’t know how to appreciate life. Humph, youth is wasted on you.”
“Experience is gained through living! Live a little, old man!”
