Gumihou: I think this chapter is meant to be humorous. Hm… anyway, massaged the details into a reasonable plot, reducing unnecessary melodrama.
“No, that is… I shall be having my meal in my room. I… have a prior appointment…”
“What prior appointment could be more important than serving the princess?”
“… …”
Princess Lulu had been restricting my movements more and more, especially after finding out that I usually have my dinner with someone other than herself.
“I know~ you are dining with Lady Makia, aren’t you? Fufu, what kind of relationship do you have with that witch? Are you lovers?”
“N-no, nothing of that sort. We are old friends. It is more like she is the master I serve…” [1]
“What are you talking about? Aren’t I your master now?”
“… …”
I’m actually scared.
There was no light in her eyes!!
“I agreed to be your knight on the condition that I may continue to have my meals with her.”
“That condition is easily circumvented by the fact that I am a princess while she is merely a Royal Mage.”
“No, that is not the issue. I am saying that this will interfere with my relationship with Makia!” There, I said it. I actually said it!
“So what is the problem?”
What?
“What?”
“You are to be my one and only personal knight from here on. Therefore, you should only look to me and think of me, thereby achieving the most righteous and proper kind of happiness. In short, that witch is nothing, isn’t it so?”
“… …”
Damn it.
Even after all that, Princess Lulubeth only saw what she wanted to see.
“However, I do not wish to be a knight who breaks his oath. Do excuse me.”
I was honestly worried about turning my back to Princess Lulu, but reaching the door was more important now.
“……!?”
But the door would not open.
“It is no use, Sir Thor…”
Before I knew it, the twin maids had appeared on either side of me. One of them had an oddly sweet smell on her…
The next thing I knew, [2] I could barely move my body.
“Ufufu, are you aware of what Gibraltar’s national flower is? Sir Thor?”
“W-what are you…”
“There is a reason why, in that country, women and especially the queen have higher status than kings and men.”
Fufu.
Fufufu~
The sound of the princess laughing echoed in my head. The laughter was just starting to fade away when I suddenly remembered what Gibraltar’s national flower was.
It was the amaryllis.
A pale purple Violet Amaryllis.

“Hah…”
The next time I opened my eyes, I found myself looking at the ceiling of a canopied bed.
It was the same canopied bed as I had seen the last time. When I tried to look around, I found myself buried under a fluffy lace blanket.
Fingers of light were already creeping into the darkened room.
“Is it… the next day ?”
That’s right. For some reason, after I noticed the sweet smell on one of the maids, I suddenly lost consciousness.
“Are you awake?”
“!?”
Lepis was beside me for some reason.
“O-oi, what are you doing here?”
[1] The sound of a female voice, even though it was someone I knew was not that creepy princess, was enough to leave me clutching the blanket to my chest and scooting away from that side of the bed.
Lepis looked at me blankly.
[2] I looked back, non-plussed by her behaviour and wondering why she was standing in my room, right next to my bed. Why do I keep waking up to women standing creepily by my bed anyway?
“The question that ought to be asked is not ‘What am I doing here?’, it’s why you broke your dinner promise with Lady Makia. The maid came to Lady Makia’s room to inform us that Sir Thor was having dinner with the princess. Lady Makia said that ‘it could not be helped’ and looked inconsolable…”
“… …” [1] ‘Inconsolable?’ Really?
“She appeared exceptionally angry.”
“That’s it! That’s the real thing!!”
“Please accept this, it’s from Lady Makia,” [2] Lepis handed me a piece of paper.
“…?”
[2] I stared at the folded piece of paper with some fear. I took it reluctantly and unfolded it to see a message in Japanese. Even a Buddha’s face can only be seen three times.
“… …”
[2] The message was clear, she was running out of patience. Speaking of which, since she uses that idiom, just how many times…
“Lady Makia specifically mentions that this is the second time. Although I do not know what she means by that.”
“Possibly… the first time is my being the Princess’s personal knight and the second time being… this… That there would not be a third time.”
“What do you intend to do? Princess Lulubeth is trying to restrain you, right? [4a] To think that she would use the Violent Amaryllis… how shocking…” said Lepis with her sleeves over her nose and mouth.
“You mean… this scent [1] is really…”
“Indeed, it’s Gibraltar’s national flower. [4a] It is used in any kind of medicine that only works on men. When used in the making of magic potions… it is frighteningly effective. If you’re given an aphrodisiac made with this flower, you’re finished in more ways than one. Your life is essentially over.”
“What the hell?! Ugh, get me out of here!!” I shrieked, feeling violated and horrified in more ways than one. [1]
“Hush, the princess is in the next room. She could wake up…”
At that moment, we felt it. [2] A hostile gaze.
Lepis and I turned towards the door that connected the princess’s room to this one. And… there she was, standing in her nightgown.
“What is going on?”
She was staring at me with those dead eyes of hers.
“Oh no,” [3] said Lepis in a deadpan voice. “This is terrible. Anyway, I shall leave you to it.”
“Oi, you…” [1] I really did not want to be left alone with that person at all times. “You’re not really going to just leave me here, are you?!”
[5] I was shocked by Lepis’s willingness to leave me alone with the Princess, especially after she had told me just how potent and damaging the Violent Amaryllis flowers could be.
[5] Although Princess Lulubeth was no mage, she had access to a really powerful drug. Then, there are also those creepy maids of hers.
[5] Before I could appeal to Lepis for help, or at least properly convey my true situation to Makia, she had vanished through spatial magic. Well, well, it looks like she’s at least proficient enough with the skill to run away.
[5] Leaving me all alone with the creepy Princess.
“… …” What should I say to her?
“Sir Thor, who was that woman?”
“Ah, she’s… a relative,” [1] I said, since it was true.
“Ufufufu, she was sent by the witch, isn’t she? Yes, yes, I understand now. That woman was desperate to tear our precious bond apart and sent that woman here…”
“[1] That’s wrong, Makia is not one to send others to do her work…”
Not to mention, if there’s anyone who wanted to ‘tear the bond apart’, it would be me.
[1] I decided that it was best to confront the princess.
[5] “Princess, you used an Amaryllis Potion on me. This is a great breach of trust between a knight and a princess. You have proven yourself to be unworthy of loyalty. If you do not refrain from using this or other similar dangerous potion, I’m afraid…”
[1] I was still feeling angry and more than a little horrified by the effects if the potion. Unlike Ulysses, I cannot break down the poisons that have entered my body.
Healing magic doesn’t work on me unless it has to do with injuries. If I had known about the poison in advance, I could have mitigated the effects a little, but I was careless and had not expected the princess to use such a thing in the first place.
“But, but… Sir Thor! A-are you to leave me and return to that witch!?”
“No, so long as I am your knight, I shall stay by your side. As it is my duty.”
“No! I hate that! I refuse-”
“Then, you are welcome to look for another night,” [1] I said, not exactly saddened by the idea of not being with this crazy woman anymore.
The Princess’s annoyed expression froze on her face.
“Sir Thor?”
“Do excuse me, I shall be returning to my room. I shall return later,” I said as I put on my jacket and hurried out of the room.
I travelled down the still-dark corridor, moving into a very long corridor that led away from the North Tower where the Princess lived.
Through the windows, I could see dawn breaking over Miradreed and breathed in the crisp morning air. A part of me was trying to shake off that coying sweet scent that put me down.
“Hahh…”
Just what happened to make Princess Lulubeth into… that?
When asked, Ulysses only said that she was a normal and cute princess when young but…
I just don’t know.
Still, the fact that she was cast aside to live in this remote place bothered me.
Well, to be honest.
It bothered me because of the memories of my past. The time before I became the Black Demon King, back when I was a child.

“Makia…… Are you awake?”
It was still very early in the morning when I knocked lightly at her door. Silence answered me. Well, I guess it made sense for her to still be sleeping at this time-
“So, you just came back?”
“Whoaaaa!!”
I jumped, literally jumped at Makia’s voice behind me.
“It must have been hard for you to creep back so early like this… also, you have a serious bedhead.”
“Wait, seriously-”
“ I will listen to your excuses inside. So, come in,” said Makia with a yawn as she preceded me into her room.
[6] Inside her room, Makia looked at me for a moment before saying, “Well, since you were not around last night, I had dinner with Lepis in Noah’s room next door.”
“Noah?” [1] it was not a name I was familiar with.
“Fufu, he’s one of your descendants. Since you’ve become a knight for the princess, His Excellency Lord Raymond put you in as an additional guard for me. By the way, Smirda’s in the Royal Capital. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen her… anyway, they were a great help.”
“Smirda’s here? And… something happened?”
“We were attacked by some demons and some strange men. I guess they must have been attracted by Smirda’s magic or mine. I don’t know who they were, but they had weapons from other continents. So, it may be related to what Lord Raymond told us the other day.”
[6] Makia said all of this in a matter-of-fact way as she poured some hot cocoa for me.
She yawned again.
“So, you’ve been in the room next door this whole time?”
“That’s right. I played cards with Noah. That kid’s pretty smart, I lost a lot. He’s a bit shy and prickly, but that just made him cuter in my eyes…”
“… …”
“He likes ships and boats a lot. He has lots of little models in his room. I supposed that’s why his Magic Fortress manifested itself as a boat. He’s only 12, but he’s pretty amazing.”
“So, he’s a kid…” I muttered as I sipped at my cocoa.
Makia nodded, “It’s like looking at a kid version of you. He’s pretty talented, so if you haven’t met him yet, do make some time to have a look at him. He is also very particular about the design of his Magic Fortress.”
“It’s risky for children to use Magic Fortress,” I replied.
“Indeed, he has a prosthetic arm thanks to it,” said Makia. [2] Her words were casual, but her eyes as she stared at me seemed to ask ‘So, what are you going to do about it?’
“Uh, I, that is… I’m sorry about today?”
“Hah?”
“I’m sorry I can’t keep my promise to have dinner together! I’m sorry!!”
Makia stared at me as I bowed my head in apology. However, instead of the expected scolding, there was only a small sigh.
“It’s fine, I heard about it from Lepis already. Still, you should do something about that girl. [6] If you just let her do as she like, don’t you think it will disgrace your reputation as the Black Demon King?”
“Y-yes, yes, you’re right. As you said.”
“You’ve always been the cool demon king-type, where’s your cool now, huh? Did you feed it to her or something?”
“No, stop ittttt!”
I cried out childishly. It was embarrassing to hear her talk about my past like that. As though she hadn’t been an even crazier witch back then.
[1] However, since I don’t want this to turn into a comparison of our mutual pasts, I decided not to bring it up.
“Still, you managed to make it here… I guess that’s what’s important…”
Somehow, in the middle of talking to me, Makia nodded over her cup of cocoa and nodded forward all the way until her forehead touched the table and she fell silent.
“M-makia?”
Had she really fallen asleep?
What a dynamic way of falling asleep.
I brought her to her bed and covered her with a blanket. Then, I brushed a long lock of hair from her face and sat by the bed, watching her sleep.
“Sorry, Makia…”
I patted her head once before standing up.
Then, I left the room suffused with the scent of cocoa towards the remote north wing.
[Gumihou: The humour was very forced, with a lot of heehhhhhh!!! and whaaaattt!! as well as uwaaahhhh!! moments. Since I’m the one who translates this, I might as well help the author mitigate the overly dramatic acting into something that’s actually funny.
I get that she wanted the BDK to be a more sympathetic character, but this is…]
[1] Thor-like dialogues, with minimal lameness
[2] Adjusted details for properly dramatic delivery
[3] Adjusted details for properly humourous delivery
[4] Lepis-like dialogue. [4a] Reasonable deduction that does not sound too fake
[5] Reduced the ‘UWAAAHHH’ ‘SHOOOKETHH!!’ reaction on Thor’s side. It was really too melodramatic, but yet written in a rather ‘omygad’ way
I’m surprised that Lepis used words such as those, but more than that, I’m terrified that she panicked like this. Because it means that, despite Princess Lerouvette not being a mage or anything, she still sensed something in her. Lepis is good at space magic and left this place in a flash. Leaving me alone.
[6] Added detail for Makia’s actions
