“Stone Bullet!”

Pow!

“Stone Bullet! Stone Bullet! Stone Bullet!!!! Haa… haa… haa…”

The tree in front of me was riddled with holes but was otherwise intact. At least, I was no longer just shooting dust from my hands.

Fire Ball came a little easier on me, but I thought it would be best to master at least one more element. What if I were in an area where I can’t freely use fire, for example?

Anyway, thanks to Fer, I managed to quickly master the Fire Ball, even though the dungeon experience was kind of stressful… still, it was pretty cool seeing my stats go up.

Which was why I decided to learn another trick to add to my repertoire.

However, Earth Magic was proving more difficult than Fire Magic…

I mean, I struggled with Fire Magic a little, but that was mostly due to inexperience. Since I already knew what magic flow felt like in my body, surely the process should be easier?

Well, spoilers.

It wasn’t.

Rather than shooting bullets, I was sweating bullets right now, trying not to die from exhaustion.

When Fer first told me that I could learn magic, I immediately jumped at the chance of getting a surefire way of defending myself. I mean, sure, it was nice to have Fer protect me, but if there’s anything I have learned ever since getting sucked into this world, it’s that it’s better to be safe than sorry. There is a possibility, no matter how slim, that I could be separated from my familiar. What then?

No, no, no, at the very least, I should secure a way to defend myself or at least increase my ability to run away. Yes, instead of fighting back, maybe I should focus on running away

“Oi, are you done? Time to make breakfast!”

“Haa… haa… ha… j-just one more… ugh.”

I fell face-first onto the floor and groaned. This was something that I had started doing after that first dungeon that Fer had forced me into. That wretched dungeon highlighted exactly how weak I was and ultimately how dependent I was on Fer’s magic barrier.

Even as a casual gamer, I recognised that beasts such as Kobolds are considered ‘weak’ monsters. Just how weak I was that I could hardly run away from them? If not for Fer’s barrier, my head would have been bashed in many times over…

Still, it was not that much more traumatic than being at war. The tension even in the back was palpable, and I saw many people and beastmen limping back with horrific injuries…

Considering how advanced their ‘healing magic’ and healing potions are in this world, the fact that these people came back with such injuries was a testament to how terrible the war was.

Well, it’s that or the management decided that it was pointless to waste resources on cannon-fodder

Something pushed my head into the grass.

“Ack!”

“Oi, breakfast. Make breakfast first before indulging in this foolishness.”

“Mrrphh!! Pwah! Stop stepping on my head like that!!” I howled.

“Humph, fine. Make breakfast.”

The magnificent-looking Legendary Beast Fenrir flung his head and pouted. I sighed. Some days, I could hardly believe that it was thanks to this glutton that I was saved from a fate worse than death. Back then, while I was technically ‘safe’ from the frontlines thanks to my ability, it was only a matter of time before someone discovered my special ‘Skill’ and forced me into churning out stuff for them.

Moreover, while it’s not like I could simply ignore my benefactor.

“Fine,” I grumbled as I searched through my [Item Box]. At the advice of a nice lady at the last town we stopped by, I registered myself as an Adventurer as well.

What happened was she heard me complaining about the pain of having to keep paying a ridiculous amount of money at the Merchant’s Guild about getting monsters butchered, and told me that members of the Adventurer’s Guild butchered monster kills at a much lower rate. I paid her a small bonus for the tip.

By the way, the bonus was in the form of pepper.

Since I needed money to buy stuff from [Net Super], it made sense to use items bought cheaply as bribes instead. Thus, I have several little bags of salt and pepper hidden in my [Item Box] to conveniently ‘smooth things over’.

I felt like a yakuza or a drug dealer when doing that…

Hahaha.

Here’s your illicit peppercorn bribe, hohoho.

Yes, you heard that right.

I had been bribing people with peppercorns and table salt. It carried its own risks since these things could be traced back to me, but I preempted that by using cheap coarse salt and the poorest quality peppercorns I could buy online. I even crushed some peppercorns and left them out in the sun to see if I could reduce their quality, and was nearly caught by some sharp nose noble.

Well, let’s just say they got lucky and ‘found’ a stash of peppercorns which I never returned for…

After that, I wised up a little and just traded using coarse salt. The ones that were normally used for salting meat and/or cleaning guts. Well, they only cost a few coppers per kilo, but here, I have to separate them into little bags, making me feel like I was some white powder dealer…

If these nobles knew that I had easy access to salt, I really don’t know what they would do to me.

Anyway, that was my little dalliance with illicit trading.

After registering with the Adventurer’s Guild, I got my monsters dismantled at a minimum rate. This allowed me to close my illegal salt trade (haha), and I even made some money selling off monster parts.

The rest was pretty much history after that.

I travelled with Fer in the woods and forest most of the time, avoiding towns and cities unless I had to trade or get a huge monster dismantled. Humans made me nervous.

Also, it’s not like I needed to trade with these people to get all the modern products I needed thanks to [Net Super]. Hurray for self-sufficiency!

Of course, I’d need money to buy stuff off [Net Super], but it was easy enough to drop by a large city once in a while to sell off monster parts for money. While it was less comfortable to live in the woods, I’d rather do that than be around people…

Fer was pretty good company. Feeling generous, after feeding him, I opened up [Net Super] and bought something I hadn’t had for a long time.

Some Anpan Bread.

Umu, what’s this?”

“It’s sweet bread, I think you’ll like it.”

“!!! It’s good!”

“See?”

Umumu, what about the others?”

“This one is stuffed with jam, and that one has a cream filling.”

Umu, they are all good.”

Later that evening…

“Master, I received an oracle from the Great Wind Goddess, Ninril-sama…”

Haha this is almost like the canon but Mukouda having a slightly different personality/opinions has a bigger impact on the story
