Director Bear pulled the cart from the front while Ramis pushed from behind. The rest of us positioned ourselves within the cart, keeping our eyes on the enemy. Although everyone was alert, the calm demeanour felt more like a picnic outing than being in imminent danger.
“We’re coming within range soon, right? Grandpa?”
“Indeed, we’re getting close,” Grandpa Shimerai declared as he rose to his feet, holding a fan with a swirling tornado painted on it.
“Director, Ramis, would you kindly stop the cart here?”
“Indeed.”
“Okay~”
The cart jolted to a halt, but Grandpa Shimerai remained standing, barely wavering. Calmly, he stepped forward, fan in hand. After a few steps, he paused.
“Ah, better if we turn the cart around. Should anything happen, we’ll need a quick retreat after my attack.”
“Excellent suggestion. Let’s do it.”
The cart wheeled around in a full turn, and Shimerai pivoted to face the enemy again—this time from the rear.
The monsters appeared to have noticed our presence, but none of them made to attack. There was probably a commander hidden within the horde, waiting for the right moment to attack.
However, based on my previous experience, even monsters under mind control would retaliate when harmed. Therefore, there was a high possibility that the monsters would retaliate the moment we struck them.
“Hoxy, Shui, prepare to intercept.”
“Please leave it to me.”
“Leave it to us-su!”
They had their bows ready and a large supply of arrows between them. With their skills, they could easily take down Frog Man monsters with a single shot.
As for me, instead of depending solely on my allies, I decided to prepare myself for the enemy’s counterattack.
“Ra-mis”
“What is it~ Hakkon?”
“Turn-me”
“Up-side-down”
Ramis frowned. She looked confused, but I don’t think it was because she misunderstood my message. She stared at me with her head tilted to the side, “Um, so, can you say that again?”
“Turn-me”
“Up-side-down”
Everyone’s head tilted to the side as well.
Wait, was my message too weird to be understood?
“Um, when you said ‘upside down’, do you mean flip you over…?”
“Ye-es”
Ramis still had an uncertain look on her face, but she did lift me to the ground [1] and flipped me so that my head was down and my feet, or base, were facing the sky.
Woah, even my view has flipped.
“Ra-mis”
“Next-to-me”
“Uh, okay…” Ramis was still unsure of my intentions, but she trusted me enough to stand by me and my suggestions.
Right, that’s me all set.
“Hmm, I don’t really get it, but let’s get on with the spell casting,” said Grandpa Shimerai as he took out another fan with the same tornado pattern on it. He spread his arms wide and flapped the fans as though he was fanning the monsters.
Two gigantic tornadoes appeared right beside our cart, sending bits of dust and pebbles all over the place, as they advanced towards the horde of monsters.
The old man’s magic was truly incredible. Just one of those tornadoes could easily demolish a house.
Still, now was not the time to be amazed. I should take action before the monsters react. While upside down, I materialised a concrete slab under my feet. Since I was upside down, the concrete slab appeared on top of me.
“Thr-ow”
Ramis, who had been staring intently at the tornadoes, turned to me and immediately understood what I wanted.
“Ah, ah! So that’s why you’re upside down! Okay, got it!”
Ramis easily grabbed the concrete slab with one hand and hurled it towards the monsters. With the enemies so densely packed together, even her usual clumsiness did not prevent her from hitting them. Her throw was so powerful that it shot through the enemies like a missile, pulverising the enemies even before it struck ground, launching more enemies into the air.
“Look, look, Hakkon!” Ramis hopped excitedly at the sight of the successful hit.
“A-ga-in”
Buoyed by her success, Ramis grabbed the concrete slabs I offered up and smashed them into the enemy horde.
“Pitee… too…”
Perhaps motivated by a sense of competition, Pitee also grabbed a concrete slab. With her <Weight Manipulation> Gift, she had no trouble grabbing the projectile and launching it into the air. Unfortunately, the influence of the Gift left the concrete slab the moment it escaped her hands, landing only a few meters ahead.
Meanwhile, tornadoes ravaged the enemy forces, throwing them into the air only to be slammed into the ground. With arrows picking off the stray enemies that tried to escape, over a hundred enemies lay dead before us in this one-sided massacre.
There was no way the enemies would stay quiet after this. As one, they all charged.
“Retreat! But maintain a certain distance. Ramis, [1] get into the cart with Hakkon and keep throwing. Pitee, lighten the cart. Shui, Hoxie, keep firing!” Director Bear roared.
“Yes!”
“Undersood!”
“Yup!”
At Director Bear’s instructions, Ramis hopped back onto the cart [1] with me, still upside down, and the cart took off. Thanks to Pitee’s Gift, Director Bear had no trouble pulling the entire cart by himself.
Meanwhile, concrete slabs and arrows continued to strike down our pursuers.
“Burn, burn!” The Director of Scorching Sand, with his arms wreathed in fire, laughed as he launched fireballs from his palm, incinerating fire monsters into crispy bits.
The enemy also threw spears at us, but most missed. Those that flew true were cut down by Mishael and Granny Yumite.
As for the enemies, well, they were now running after us with a single-mindedness that was quite terrifying.
“From here on, let’s go with Plan B!” Director Bear shouted.
“Yes!”
Naturally, we have several strategies prepared, depending on the enemy’s reactions. Plan B was the most convenient one for us.
Instead of heading straight for the gate, Director Bear veered off to the side, changing course as he ran parallel to the wall. The enemy horde chased after us, creating a thin triangle with the tip stretching after us.
As we ran along the wall, troops situated on the wall, a torrent of spears and arrows rained down behind us. Even upside down, I had a good view of the enemies turning into porcupines with the number of spears and arrows stuck in them.
Under normal circumstances, even monsters would retreat from this mindless slaughter. However, since these simple-minded creatures had been given the orders to attack via the Skull Ring, they continued to run after us.
The Commander could only issue three types of commands: Hold, Attack, Retreat.
Right now, the monsters being slaughtered behind us were under the command to Attack. There was also a group of about a hundred monsters gathered around the Frogman King that had not moved from their original position. I could only assume that there must be a Commander hidden there.
Also, since they have not issued the order to retreat, it looked like the Skull Ring’s power was limited by distance.
After reaching the end of one side of the wall, about 30% of the monsters pursuing us had been shot down. Still, that left another 70% worth of monster. Going with this strategy, we made an abrupt turn and ran for the other end of the wall. After three round trips, the number of monsters decreased a lot.
At the final pass under the wall, some Hunters had leapt down the wall to engage in some hand-to-hand combat.
“Uoooh! It’s our victory!” the Scorching Sand Director howled. Hunters raised their fists and weapons, their victorious cries ringing in the air.
We had won despite the overwhelming difference in numbers. So, their excitement was well-deserved. Even though the Commander and the Frogman King were still there, there was no need to dampen the mood by mentioning them.
With our forces largely intact, it looked like we could easily defeat the Frogman King. Amidst the jubilant cheers of the people, I stared over the motionless bodies of monsters scattered as far as the eye could see.
[Gumihou: I wonder how they’re going to dispose of the monster corpses…]
[1] Continuity issue, Ramis was on the ground while Hakkon was in the cart. And then they were… not in the cart? Also, the height difference between Hakkon-in-cart and Ramis-on-ground plus concrete slab just doesn’t math properly. Anyway, made it less vague.
