It was pretty troublesome getting into the Town of Router.
The problem had nothing to do with Fer this time. Instead, it was the long, long line of people queuing to enter the town.
[8] When we first approached the end of the queue, people actually screamed and ran away. [1] I had to placate them by saying, “He’s my familiar, so it’s alright. Really, he’s my familiar,” in my best soothing voice.
When we reached the head of the queue we were confronted by a line of soldiers in full metal armour. Spears were pointing at us.
“Halt!”
“Fer, please stop,”
Fer stopped baring his teeth at them. The soldiers trooped forward in formation.
“This is your familiar?”
“Yes, yes, please check my Adventurer’s card.” [5]
“Hmm, looks legit,” the soldier eyed Fer. “That a Great Wolf?”
“Yes,” I did my best not to say anything excessive.
“Impressive, to think A Rank monsters could be tamed to become familiars.”
“Yes, I was very lucky, haha…”
“The reports said you rode this Great Wolf in. To think he’d also carry you on his back. Considering the circumstances, he seems tame enough to be let in. However, if anything happens, as the owner of the familiar you are liable for all its crimes. Depending on the severity of the loss or casualty, you will either be sentenced to death or slavery. Therefore, be mindful of your familiar’s actions.”
“Yes, I understand,” [3] the warning was pretty heavy, but we’re finally in!
Still, punishment by death or slavery… isn’t that too scary?
So that means there are slaves in this world, huh. [5]
[8] Anyway, let’s get to an inn first, since the soldier was already here I politely asked, [4] “Where might I find an inn that also caters to large familiars?”
The soldier helpfully provided me with the directions to ‘Elmira’s Inn’. [5]
As the town nearest to the Royal Capital, there were quite a lot of people here compared to all the previous small towns I’ve encountered.
Aside from humans, I also saw Beastmen with furry ears and tails. [2] However, all of them were dressed in tattered clothes and wore chains around their necks. So, I guess these are slaves?
While I was taking in the scene, Fer and I attracted some attention too. Although most of them merely stared or made little comments to each other, none actually made a commotion.
By the way, Elmira’s Inn cost 8 silvers per night for myself and Fer.
After paying the fee, I left Fer at the barn behind the inn to check out the bookstore after getting directions from the innkeeper.

The bookstore was filled with old-fashion looking books. [6] Like the ones that should be kept behind glass and not placed on shelves like this.
I went around searching for something that looked like a map but found nothing.
Instead, I found a book entitled ‘Magical Introduction for Simpletons’.
This, I thought, looks promising.
I could use Fire Magic and Fireball through Fer’s trial by fire kind of training, but it might be useful to look up magical theory or other kinds of magic.
I weighed the book in my hands. It felt heavy. I had heard that books were expensive in ancient times, but, this place isn’t quite ancient, right?
Nevertheless, I brought the book to the counter, “Excuse me, how much is this book?”
The storekeeper glanced over and said, “7 gold coins,”
Wow, that’s pretty expensive! [5]
[6] Never mind. I coughed and put the book back where I found it. Let’s try the library next. Before that I asked the storekeeper, “Erm, if you don’t mind my asking, is there a place where I could buy a map around here?”
“A common bookstore like this don’t carry such things,” he sniffed.
[6] “Er, okay?”
[4] “Only people in the royal castle or hold high military positions have access to things such as maps,”
I guess, maps are classified as military secrets? [5]
At a loss, I went back to the inn empty-handed. [5]
[6] As I made dinner for Fer, thoughts of getting a map filled my mind.
I could get information from Adventurers in taverns and inns, however, not knowing whether a country is in the north, south, east or west would not help much.
In the end, I still need a map.
Is it possible to get a copy of an old map of some sort?
Well, let’s try out the library tomorrow.
Oh, and let’s look up books on magic too.
